Oh my goodness, this is a great article for me. I've had a severly traumatized pony for three years and have made, what I consider, little progress, but in the scope of severity--maybe I've made more progress than I thought. I'm starting to wonder, though, if there is only so far I'll ever get with her. Because, at her core, she really does not trust humans. You made a good point about treats--they'll approach for them, but there's still a lot of tension. Also, treats were used to manipulate her into being "caught" in the past, so she seems to mistrust them even as she wants them. She does stand for the farrier because she'll let me halter her. However, if she's in a large pasture with other horses, she'll choose to never have human contact. She's not mean at all and has NEVER kicked or bitten--she'll just run. She broke the fence a couple of times--the low wire--and, of course, I couldn't catch her, but she is very smart and trots to the barn and enters a stall. Still, I didn't like it because what if there was an emergency and I couldn't get her? So, I put her in a smaller enclosure with turnout. Honestly, I'm not really sure what to do anymore.

Patience and Technique with the use of Clicker Training is an excellent source of working with the a difficult horse. You just have to last longer than the will of the horse. Every human can outlast the horse if they are determined to do so. So the use of food can be an excellent way to work with even the most difficult horse if you leave the clock at home

Thanks Cindy.

Hopefully one day Gracie will be as comfortable around people as your Grace was.

We have her last foal, she was pregnant when she came to the rescue.
He is 2 now and we just recently found an awesome home for him. He's actually going to his new home this weekend.

Mary

Great to know you too have used CAT successfully. My 13 year old Paso Fino mare was somewhat tense in the arena and then when the spring thaw came, the sound of falling icicles REALLY spooked her. We practiced CAT in the arena for a couple of days and I could see her becoming more and more comfortable. Annalee F
