I talked a little bit awhile ago about the camp where I’ll be working this summer. I’ll be volunteering at several weekend sessions before camp starts so that I can start to get to know the horses and learn how the program works. I went out for the first time this morning and everything went wonderfully!
This was a weekend for campers with Spina Bifida (What is Spina Bifida?). We used two of the horses, Cash and Broadway, and the campers had a great time riding on some of the short trails at the camp. All of the riding at camp is on a lead line–this is for the safety of the campers and the well-being of the horses. There’s not really time for proper riding lessons since the campers only come for a weekend or a week and ride once or twice at most.
I wrote up just a bit about each of the horses on this page. I’ll add more information and some pictures once I get to know them better. I spent most of the morning working with a dun gelding named Cash. He was an absolute saint! This is his first year in the program and this was his first weekend giving rides a camp. However, he acted like a pro and was calm and attentive the entire time.
