Glad you enjoyed the article!

I think there's a lot of horsemanship "common sense" that doesn't have a whole lot of sense to it. Sure it's good to have the horse comfortable with mounting from the ground, but there's no reason to insist one way or the other.

Mary

Mary
I was always made to feel like a total dweeb and unfit idiot for using a mounting block. The idea was that if I didn't mount from the ground, my riding skills and horsemanship was sadly lacking. But I felt that I owed it to Maira and Millie to keep their backs safe and to protect them from my inability to mount in less than three tries to their relatively high backs. I'm five feet tall and Millie is 16.2. Yes, doing it would prove athletic prowess. But at what cost to the horse?
Thanks for reminding me that it's not such a bad idea to use the block and that it didn't make me a bad rider.

exactly Kate!

I've ridden a few draft crosses, and trying to scramble into the saddle from the ground can be quite a trick!

Nice post - another good reason to use a mounting block is if you have a (too) big horse!
