Evolution and the Texas School Board

Sometimes it’s embarrassing to be a Texan…

Shouldn’t scientists and those who are experts in the fields of biology and evolution be the ones who decide what goes in textbooks?

The vast majority of scientists and biologist accept evolution and natural selection as the best theories to explain our world. This doesn’t mean they understand completely how evolution works–there are legitimate debates in the scientific community about the specific mechanics and finer points of the theory.

Instead of listening to those who have spent decades studying the evidence, we let politics and religion influence what will be taught in school. Plenty of cultures have creation myths, heck, offer a elective on mythology or religious history and teach your creation myths there. But don’t put them in the science classroom.

Giving equal time and credibility for ideas like intelligent design, which cannot stand up to the scrutiny of science, is preposterous. Biology and science are about making claims and predictions that are observable, testable, repeatable, and falsifiable. Evolution theory stands up to this challenge, intelligent design does not.

Just be careful, soon they’ll be teaching intelligent falling in the physics classroom…

  • Hi! Thanks for commenting.

Hopefully the school board will make the right decision this week. Otherwise, I think TX is going to be the laughing stock of the nation.

Growing up, I don't remember ever learning anything about evolution in school. Then again, we didn't learn anything about intellegent design, either. They just kind of ignored the issue.

I really object, though, to them putting wording in the textbooks that makes evolution theory appear weak or that promotes intellegent design.

By the way, I checked out your blog. I really liked the series of posts you did on your feral cats! Good for you for looking out for them. While I lived in Chicago, I volunteered at a spay/neuter clinic that saw a lot of ferals.
  • Seriously? Is Texas not teaching Science any more?

It freaks me out when people take knowledge away from their children that the mainstream has just because they have a strong belief or "feeling" about God.

I don't think S/He intended it to happen that way.

    Neat blog!
