Well, I’ve graduated!
The eventful day was about a week ago. But I’ve been travelling some this past week, so I haven’t had a chance to post on my blog until now.
Those of you who follow my blog know that I’ve spent the past three years working on a master’s degree in behavior analysis at the University of North Texas, where I’ve studied animal (and human) behavior and animal training under the direction of Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz.
What happens next?
As I’ve mentioned on my blog, this summer I began my own animal training and consulting business, Texas Animal Training. I will be offering training classes, private lessons, and consulting services for people and their pets in Denton, Dallas, and the surrounding North Texas area.
I’ll also be teaching some very cool classes this fall for children at Dog City Training Center in Addison, Texas. The classes will teach children about animal behavior and positive animal training. You can read more here about the kids classes.
Congratulations – that’s a big achievement!
Thanks, Kate!

Congratulations!!!
Thank you, Miki!

Congrats!!! That is a huge accomplishment! 🙂
Congratulations!! 🙂
That is so good, Mary. I know what a prodigious amount of work your degree has entailed. Well done. I’m hoping you may develop some short, simple online ‘shaping’ exercises for the rest of us to play with??? But I know that your time will be at a premium.
Good luck with TAT. Pretty sure you will be an amazing asset to the animals and owners in your area.
Hi Hertha,
Sorry for the delay responding to your comment. I was sure I had responded, but either I didn’t, or it got lost somewhere in cyberspace.
Actually, I have a big ‘shaping exercises’ project in the works… more info to come later on. 🙂
But at least part of it will involve some online resources that I hope will help people improve their shaping and training skills.
Also, you would enjoy this — I just had a vet student friend send me an email. She has just given clicker training a try and in only a few days has already had great success with a hard to treat long-term equine patient. Stories like that really inspire me to keep sharing the word about positive training!
cheers,
Mary
Hi Mary,
First of all I would like to congratulate you on this achievement! Reaching our goals is a great feeling, isn’t it? 🙂
I have been reading your blog posts recently. I really like the approach you take on such a sensitive topic as the animals’ training and caring, so I feel to be able to trust what you write about, since it shows honesty and yet very good advice.
Being myself a dog owner, I have been working on a web startup that will help animals’ owners provide a better care to their animals and directly communicate with their professional caregivers (vets, trainers, sitters etc).
I considered this post a good chance to ask if such an idea sounds interesting. If so, I can come back to provide the link of our website (which is at the development stage and we’re working hard to be launched as soon as possible) so that anyone can take a look and hopefully leave a feedback.
Best regards
Manos
Congratulations Mary, I have enjoyed following your journey so far and will look forward to even more in the future
Congratulations!
Have you written a master’s thesis for the degree?
Hi Asa,
Sorry for the delay responding to your comment. I was sure I had responded, but either I didn’t, or it got lost somewhere in cyberspace.
Yes, I worked on a thesis research project and wrote a master’s thesis for my degree. It will be available for free online (eventually). It just takes the school some time to get everything processed and finalized.
cheers,
Mary
Whoo Hooo!! Since I know people in your area I will be sure to let anyone know where to go if they have questions or problems.
Hi Tracy,
So, so, sorry for the delay responding to your comment! I was sure I had responded, but either I didn’t, or it got lost somewhere in cyberspace.
Thanks for the congrats.
If you do know people in DFW needing behavior or training help, I would definitely appreciate any referrals. Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it.
cheers,
Mary
