Chewie’s Diary Week 51: Snow day

We’ve had some bitterly cold weather here in north Texas, along with lots of ice and snow! For several days, the temperature did not get above freezing.

I’m not sure if Chewie has seen snow before, but she certainly wasn’t bothered!

In fact, I think she had a lot of fun running and playing in the snow.

One fun part about the snow is that it allowed me to see which parts of the pasture Chewie and Liberty were using and which parts they were not using.

In the photo below, there is a set of horse hoof prints and a set of donkey hoof prints, almost overlapping. I suspect that Liberty was going first and Chewie was following, which is how I sometimes see them walking across the pasture.

Enrichment activities

The snow has disrupted many of our normal routines. Still, I’ve been trying to make sure that Chewie and Liberty have some enrichment activities.

Chewie and Liberty got some horse soup, which I created by adding a generous amount of hot water to their normal food.

They both seemed to enjoy slurping around and eating this interesting new concoction. Although, Chewie made a bit of a mess and had quite a dirty nose afterward!

Training in the snow

Once the ice and snow stopped and the sun came back out, we even found a bit of time to do some training in the snow!

Training in the snow offers a good opportunity for generalization. The ground feels a little different as we walk over it. As well, everything looks a little different and sounds a little different.

I set up some horse agility obstacles, and we had fun playing together!
