Chewie’s Diary Week 8: Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday, Chewie!

I’m not sure of Chewie’s exact age.

But, the rescue knew she was a spring 2023 baby, and the vet guessed that her birthday could have been around April 1.

So, April 1 is her “official” birthday on her Coggin’s certificate and other veterinary paperwork.

And, that’s official enough for me.

I think Chewie was happy that it was her birthday — she got some extra scratches and some extra treats!

I tried taking some proper birthday photos of her, but she’s too friendly and curious.

She was pretty sure that my phone was some sort of delicious treat or fun toy.

“Too friendly” is not a bad problem to have, but I guess that one behavior we need to start working on soon is stay. 🙂

Old enough for riding?

I’ve had several people ask me recently when I am going to start riding Chewie.

A two-year-old horse is still very young.

With good care, many horses live into their mid-20s.

Many people don’t realize that a horse’s bones don’t finish growing and their growth plates don’t finish developing until the horse is around six years of age.

So, we will be waiting for several more years before we do any riding!

Meanwhile, there is still PLENTY that we can do — basic training from the ground, trick training, liberty work, horse agility, training for veterinary behaviors, and much, much more.
